22.05.99 – Wasserüberschwemmung überall in der Schweiz
There are some things that photography just can’t capture- it is too still, and the event is too dynamic, too all-encompassing, too loud, too fast.
I’m standing in the middle of the flooded Limmat, the water moving so incredibly fast.
It’s so powerful, everywhere I look this huge force is barreling by, a stampede of water.
The waves are always changing, always moving, but at the same time they stand still in their own way.
The deafening sound, as it crashes into and knocks over anything in its way.
I watched a piece of wood get carried by- it couldn’t have been more than 20 seconds for when it appeared on one horizon until it disappeared on the other. The sound is almost accepted as a background at times, so overwhelmingly present at others. I almost get a seasick feeling of ME moving, even though I’m standing still and the WATER is moving!
It makes me feel so small, like the human scale is so insignificant, but at the same time it’s so invigorating and dynamic!
Everyone walking by, stopping and staring in awe, snapping photos that will do as poor a job of capturing the experience as mine will.
It’s dizzying.
24.05.99- Rheinfall
water squeezed between piers, hits dead spots, pushes through
lots of swirls in clash between moving and still
eventually still brought along with moving
really reminded me of the computer animation of the parting of the Red Sea in Prinz von Aegypten
like clashing of two wakes, overlap
here low enough, can see more of pier, where slants out
