Tuscany is a wine producing region. Chianti, Montepulciano, Montalcino- they're all places in Tuscany! We thought it would be a shame to spend a week in Tuscany and not do any wine-tasting! :)
Since we'd done so much travelling already, we made our decision on which wine-producing town to visit based on location. Montalcino was the closest- not to mention famous for its Brunello di Montalcino and the younger Rosso di Montalcino- so that's where we went.
At first we had a sense of deja vu, as we recognized some of the roads from our looong ride home from Asciano. No worries, though- we didn't have any problems this time!
Soon the roads were flanked by vineyards.
They plant roses at the ends of the rows!
A village on top of a hill emerged into view. This is Montalcino!
There were such nice views as we wound our way up the hill.
We parked the car in the lot just outside of town and started exploring.
Such a cute little town!
It's got great little narrow (and steep!) streets...
...and little pockets of interest...
...and fantastic views out to the surrounding countryside whenever the streets open out to them!
We had lunch at a nice little outdoor cafe.
A Scandinavian family sat at the next table. The little girl had the funniest, most immense smile I had ever seen, and her big brother seemed to be excited to do "big kid" stuff that his little sister couldn't!
...or at least his parents tried to get him to feel that way.
Montalcino has some neat remnants of past lives of its buildings.
The owners of this building apparently think so, too!
We explored the town a little bit longer...
...then made our way back to the main piazza, which was lined with one shop after another.
We got to try a couple different wines in these shops. I wish I had a more discerning tongue- I couldn't always tell the difference! Maybe it's just because they were all good! We each bought a few bottles and split the cost of shipping them back to the US- yay, we got some of our Christmas shopping done in June!
That was about it for our trip to Montalcino!
And as for the trip home? We got stuck behind the slowest car ever. EVER!
I didn't think that could happen in Italy! :)
