I headed back to the farmhouse, greeted AM and T, who were perhaps a bit more sane than me and caught up on some of their missed sleep from the night before. We had a fantastic breakfast of potatoes, eggs and rosemary, all from our harvest basket! and then made plans for the day.
My travel guide had talked about the Crete Sinese, or "Sienese Crests" that are really spectacularly scenic. They are just south of Siena, and from our maps it didn't look like they would be all that far away.
There was supposedly a farmer's market in one of the towns along the way, so we could pick up some food there, and find a nice place to have a relaxed picnic and take in the sunshine, fresh air and fantastic scenery!
After breakfast we hopped in the car and were on our way.
This is a factory building of some sort in Taverna d'Arbia, a little town we went through as we got off the highway and made our way to the scenic drive. There was something kind of intriguing about it. It's also kind of a reminder that Tuscany is a real place, with people doing real, workaday things here as anywhere- it's not all postcard-scenery!
Of course, that being said, I couldn't help but take tons of pictures of our journey: it really was picture postcard perfect! :)
Everything around us was planted, and the fields alternated between golds and browns and greens as we made our way through the rolling landscape.
And we wound our way through! The road was so curvy! We kept looking from one side to the other, and couldn't quite decide what was the prettiest view!
We'd be nestled into a cozy setting, as the road made its way around the perimeter of a little valley, then wham! we'd cross over some ridge and the horizon would open up and we could see for miles! ...er, kilometers! :)
It's so different from home, but in an intriguing, not entirely foreign sort of way. Everything was so dry, it reminded me more of California, and our trip up to Napa Valley when the three of us got together in San Francisco years ago!
Then a town started to come into view...
This is Asciano- the town we were trying to get to! It was too late for the farmer's market, but we decided to stop anyway and have a look around!
