Flashback: 08.03.1999 - Bellinzona

Mo., den 08.03.99

On my way to Bellinzona:

Those ever-elusive mountains! Wow, that seems like a dumb thing to say. But I think I must have done the same sketch 100 times and can never seem to capture them.

But when we pull out of the second tunnel, just before Zug it's a spectacular view: green, flat, in the foreground, grey blah buildings poking up, and those mountains raising the horizon way above it all, making it somehow seem cozy.

But I like the Italian accent auf Deutsch, sounds almost a bit awkward, then suddenly flowing and trilling so effortlessly in Italian. "Meine Damen und Herren, wir treffen in Zug ein. Senore e senori..."

My impression of Zug (kanton) is green rolling hills, (but tall), farms, placid water, everywhere soft smooth lines. Even bumps of land and mounds of dirt are covered with grass that would be the envy of any suburban front lawn owner.

funny here- so flat, then suddenly BOOM! MOUNTAINS!

(just before Erstfeld)- suddenly side of mountain drops off with jagged cliffs- dynamited or landslides?

then suddenly a mountain that seemed to be overloaded with powdered sugar

Which canton is this? URI.

deep ravines, with teal mountain streams running through
then we were descending, into the next little town

now long looping tunnel, we're climbing back up again...

There's a lot of stone here, used everywhere, some just crumbling down the mountainside. Much a deep oxidized reddish color.

Flat tafels used on end as walls.

Bellinzona:

charcoal gray granite stones on ground
deep trench here- water (but also trash)

So tall, feels so narrow, like going into a cavern, don't know if it's big enough, yet really ~2m

lose sense of scale

concrete, poured, right up until it meets with the stone
constant sound of water dripping down cloff, heightens feeling of dark, dank, spooky
